The AX chair
The initial idea for the AX chair was to create furniture that was good to sit in and beautiful in its simplicity. The design shows what was modern in 1950 - minimizing material and weight while maximizing function and lightness.
The sides of the chair are constructed with laminated beechwood around a core of mahogany - leg, seat, arm, and back are all one piece. The chair arm is formed by slicing the lamination at the middle and bending it up to form the arm. The chair is “knock-down” type - all the pieces can be taken apart and shipped flat. This was new at the time and showed the new tendencies towards mass production and industrial techniques.
The chair won international acclaim, prizes from the trienale in Milan in 1951 og 1954.
